David Schildknecht: The sole lot of generic Zind-Humbrecht 2008Gewurztraminer – largely from the Herrenweg though incorporatingsome fruit from more chalky sites – finished with 42 grams ofresidual sugar which even measurably abundant acidity struggles tobalance. This is another of those wines of its collection thatharbor strong mushroom scents bound to render it controversial,though classic litchi, rose petal, and brown spices also abound. Itcertainly displays density and sheer persistence, and things mightcome 'round right in time with a diminution of fungal elements andeffective harnessing of what is for now only potential vivacity.Perhaps revisit in half a dozen years? Incidentally, this isZind-Humbrecht’s sole dry Gewurztraminer of the vintage, all of theothers harboring over 40 grams residual sugar, and most well over.
